FC BATE Borisov vs AC Milan, 2nd Nov 2011

By Shivashankar

FC BATE Borisov refuse to go down as BAIT!

In a shocker of a match, Bate Borisov came from behind to secure a clinical draw against seven time European champions AC Milan. A second half penalty from Renan Bressan cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 22nd minute strike. The Belarusian team played was passionately cheered on by 41,000 vociferous supporters at Dynama Stadium, Minsk. BATE’s goalkeeper, Aleksandr Gutor made some fabulous saves to deny Milan the winner.

Eariler, Milan had started the game with Ibrahimovic and Robinho toying with almost the entire BATE team. Ibrahimovic was happily everywhere around the ball, as he took positions in the wing, inside the box, distributed some neat balls from the midfield and even defended a bit! Following his double against Roma in the league, Ibra was at his fluent best in the first half and scored a beauty of a goal, following an assist from Robinho, who won the ball in the midfield from Simic, to set up Ibra in the 22nd minute.

Robinho was nevertheless, wasteful, as he escaped punishment for a deliberate and outrageous elbow on Simic. Perhaps as retribution, he failed to score in a one-one situation, in the 39th minute. (And he remained goal-less for the entire game!)

For Bate, it was their 21 year old striker, Maksim Skavysh, who forced Abbiati into a decent save, just 2 minutes after Milan’s opener. Skavysh continued to be a menace inside the Milan box. He also had an appeal for penalty, after he had a clash with Thiago silva in Milan’s box. Keeper Aleksandr Gutor also made some excellent saves to deny Ibrahimovic on many occasions.

The rest of the 1st half progressed, with Milan continually creating attacks through the lively Boateng and Taiwo. Bate defended poorly and even let Thiago Silva, playing as CB, a free run, until he was judged offside!

The second half unfolded an entirely different story, as Bate made a lackluster Milan pay. Dmitri Baga fired a couple of shots to spring his side into action. At the other end, Gutor made an excellent save from Robinho’s shot. In the 55th minute, Abate clashed with Bate winger, Kontsevoi, which led to a penalty. Bressan, fired home a powerful shot past Abbiati for the equalizer. Milan frantically tried to restore the lead through Boateng and Ibrahimovic, minutes after Bate’s equalizer.

Nesta was substituted by Daniele Bonera, who sent a wonderful through ball to Boateng in the 77th minute, but Gutor came to rescue, once again. It was perhaps Milan’s last decent effort on goal. After a woeful game, Robinho was subbed off, for youngster Andrea Ganz to make his debut.

Bate’s substitute Pavlolv, who came on for Baga, was guilty for horribly giving away two freekicks. Bate’s defense prevailed however. Skavysh nearly scored the winner for Bate in the 2nd minute of injury time, but for Abbiati, who made a great save, not only to save the game for Milan, but also to save their pride!

For Bate, this draw gave them atleast a mathematical hope, for qualifying to the next round, as their progress was dependent on the result of Viktoria Pizen vs Barcelona
TOP OF THE MATCH:

MILAN:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Even though he squandered lots of goal scoring chances in the second half, Ibra was lively for the entire game and scored the crucial opener.

BATE BORISOV:

Aleksandr Gutor - Although he coul do nothing about Ibra’s opener, this young keeper made some fantastic saves to deny Ibrahimovic, Boateng,Robinho, and kept the entire Milan team frustrated with a fine display.

FLOP(s) OF THE MATCH:

Alberto Aquilani – Was a bystander, and was hugely ineffective. Aptly subbed off in the 69th minute.

Robinho – Was lucky to avoid punishment for an elbow on Simic. Wasteful on several occasions and was not even able to score with only just the keeper to beat.
